NORTH WILKESBORO -- A former N.C. Highway Patrol trooper who retired last year has been named the new police chief for North Wilkesboro.

The Winston-Salem Journal says Joe Rankin Jr. will serve as interim chief until Chief Randy Rhodes retires in May 2010. Rhodes has been the police chief since 2002 but has been on medical leave because of recurring back problems that required surgery.

Rankin, 50, who retired from the patrol in December, spent 25 years as a trooper stationed in Wilkes County also spent several years as a police officer in Gastonia at the start of his law-enforcement career.
