Community Service Honored by Watauga Commission PDF Print

A woman whose community service serves as an inspiration was honored by Watauga commissioners at last night’s board meeting in a proclamation.

Shirlee Gaines Edwards not only helped to start Watauga Children’s Council, the Department of Social Services Child Protection Program, OASIS and other organizations, she is active in United Way and Hospitality House. That’s just touching the surface according to Commission Chair Jim Deal.

Anyone who has volunteered in Watauga has run into her, he said.

Edwards, who works in the Department of Social Services, graciously accepted the County’s proclamation.

She felt honored that her daughter and grandchildren are also volunteers. She expects them to carry on the tradition.

According to Deal, it would be impossible to repay Edwards for her thousands of hours of service.
