Watauga and Johnson County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 22-year-old Mountain City man on Friday after he allegedly tried to steal a pickup truck then ran from authorities.

Sheriff Len Hagaman said the Ford Ranger was reportedly stolen from Brown’s Auto Garage on Highway 421 in Vilas.

Deputies spotted the vehicle on Highway 421 and tried to pull the suspect over, but the suspect drove away and took several back roads to try and elude the officer.

The pursuit continued across the state line when authorities from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol helped with the chase.

The suspect reportedly slid off the road and ran on foot.  Watauga and Johnson County deputies then apprehended him a short distance from the truck.

Garret Wesley Howard was charged in Tennessee with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, and felonious possession of a stolen vehicle.  He was charged in North Carolina for fleeing to elude arrest.  Further charges in NC are pending as the investigation continues into the theft of the vehicle.

Hagaman said Howard is also wanted in Virginia.
