An update on a story we brought you yesterday- Avery County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a dumpster over the weekend after a casket was allegedly dropped off, according to Chief Deputy Dallas Pate.
Pate said the casket was rusted and in poor shape. According to Pate, prior to being dumped, the casket did have a body in it- and it had been in the ground since the seventies.
The family of the deceased had a permit from the health department to exhume the body, according to Pate. The coffin is believed to have come from Tanglewood, the cemetery behind the Linville Rescue Squad.
It is Pate’s understanding that the deceased was placed in a new casket and reburied.
The office is performing an investigation- but not into any malicious criminal activity. The question remains as to whether or not the casket’s placement in the dumpster constitutes a biohazard.
