With the start of a new year, many new state laws begin taking effect today.

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, one of the new laws requires drivers using handicapped parking cards to carry registration cards showing the window hang was issued to them or their passengers.

A new law has raised the tax credit for film companies shooting in North Carolina from 15 percent to 25 percent of qualifying expenses.

Another will allow workers who have lost their part-time jobs to apply for unemployment benefits even if they are only seeking part-time work.

A new law on the books will also require that local government officials take classes on ethics.

According to the Citizen-Times, another will require that the state keep track of deaths caused by police officers.  The public will reportedly be able to find out how many times each law enforcement agency has used deadly force.
