Dollar Days Returns to Grandfather Mountain PDF Print

With December just around the corner, officials at Grandfather Mountain are gearing up for their annual Dollar Days event.

All residents who live or work in one of the five High Country counties can visit Grandfather Mountain for $1.  The five counties included in the High Country are Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes.

According to Granfather’s news director Landis Wofford, because of the current shortage at area food banks, High Country residents can actually visit the mountain next month by donating one or two cans of food per person.  Wofford said this program is called Grandfather’s December Food Drive and all donations will be distributed to High Country food pantries.

In order for residents to take advantage of the $1, or two can, admission, they must bring a driver’s license, college ID, or local utility bill as proof of High Country residency.  An employee ID badge or pay stub can also be used to show employment at a High Country business.

Grandfather Mountain Operations Manager Crae Morton said, “Grandfather Mountain would not be what it is without the support of the local community, and we thank everyone for their generosity and good will.”

If Mother Nature cooperates, Grandfather will be open every day in December except Christmas Day.  The hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and residents can call the entrance gate at (828) 733-4337 for weather conditions and possible closure information.
