lorettaclawson.jpgAs we draw closer to Election Day, High Country Radio will take a look at several of the candidates running for local offices.  Today, we’ll profile incumbent Boone Mayor, Loretta Clawson, who is seeking her third term in office.

Clawson grew up in the Old Beech Mountain community in Avery County before moving to Boone in 1966.  She’s married with two children and two grandchildren.

Clawson graduated from Cranberry High School and took classes at Caldwell Community College and Appalachian State University.  Her working career began at Shadowline Industries and she retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  Clawson has served on the Boone Town Council for eight years and has served as the Mayor of Boone for four years.  She has served on many local and regional committees and boards including the League of Municipalities, the Southern Appalachian Historical Association, the North Carolina Coalition of Mayors, the League of Women Voters, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, the Watauga County Humane Society, and many others.

When asked about her vision for Boone in the next 10 years at the Meet the Candidates forum on Tuesday night, Clawson said, “I want to see continued protection of these mountains.  We’ve worked very, very hard to put in steep-slope regulations and I think these mountains around us are the most precious things we can have.  Another priority I have is wonderful neighborhoods… Also, I’d like to see alternative energy.  I love that windmill.  I’d like to see some more up there with it.”

According to www.LorettaClawson.com, a few of her other priorities include working for a new water source for Boone, promoting local businesses, expanding the greenway, adding more parks, and completing the new Watauga High School.
