The Hickory Police Department arrested a man who they have come to know as the 'Polite Robber.'

Police arrested 36-year-old Robby Lee Kirkland, of Conover, yesterday because they believe he took a woman’s purse in the Walmart parking lot on Highway 70 in Hickory.

Our Foothills Bureau reports authorities call Kirkland the 'Polite Robber' because he is believed to have approached the victim and said, “Excuse me, ma’am, give me your purse.  I have a gun, but I won’t hurt you.”

Hickory Police Captain Thurman Whisnant told the Hickory Daily Record that his office received two tips from sources that pointed them to the same two people.

Although Kirkland was arrested early yesterday, a warrant for robbery with a dangerous weapon has also been taken out for 39-year-old James Arthur Baker Junior.

Kirkland is being held in the Catawba County Jail under a $30,000 bond.
