Local energy provider, Blue Ridge Electric, has a few tips to save energy as the temperature begins to dip with winter on the horizon.

Rene Whitener, of Blue Ridge Electric, said residents can find and seal air leaks inside and around the exterior of their home.  Areas around fixtures, dryer vents, chimneys, doorframes, windows, and faucets are especially likely to have air leaks.

Whitener said if you’re in the market for new doors or windows, items with the Energy Star label retain heat the best.

Attics and flooring above unheated areas should also be properly insulated in order to hold heat in living spaces of homes.

Whitener explained homeowners should also have their furnaces checked by a professional to make sure it’s running safely and properly.  Residents should also remember to change furnace filers according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Residents can also program thermostats to automatically raise and lower home temperatures for energy savings day and night.

Whitener said replacing standard light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs will also save energy at the home.
