Appalachian State University received a $509,620 grant from the National Science Foundation so the school could purchase a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope/scanning transmission electron microscope.
According to the App State News Bureau, the microscope will replace an older electron microscope that uses film to capture images.
Director of ASU’s William C. And Ruth Ann Dewel Microscopy Facility, Dr. Guichuan Hou, said the new microscope is so strong it will be able to capture high-resolution digital images of samples as small as mitochondria, enzyme proteins, and the microtubules in cells.
The new microscope should be installed and ready to use by the spring semester.
