Little did Morris Hampton, of Blowing Rock, know that when he sold his landscaping service to compete in barbecue competitions a few years ago, that he would be representing the entire state in an international competition.
Hampton, who is also known as Big Mo, said he would be one of over 70 competitors vying to win the 21st Annual Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational in October.
Hampton explained there would be one representative from every state in the competition, as well as representatives from over 20 other countries.
Hampton said, “That’s one of the biggest honors you can have with as many good cook teams as there are in North Carolina. To represent those guys is a big honor. We’re looking forward to getting over there and giving them a taste of some Carolina barbecue.”
Hampton’s dry rub barbecue has already given him national prestige as he recently won the Battle of the Pigs competition in Johnson City and the Prilosec OTC BBQ Shootout Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Hampton explained that by winning the Prilosec competition, he has the opportunity to travel to every racetrack owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc. to let race fans sample his barbecue.
Hampton explained that he and his wife are looking into a location to open a restaurant, but as of right now, he only caters and vends his award-winning barbecue. Residents who are interested in having Hampton cater an event can contact him at (828) 266-1440.
