AMA, La. -- A Hickory man was one of two killed in a weekend plane crash in Louisiana.
Charles Parish Sheriff's Office told WSOC-TV news that 61-year-old James F. Miller of
Gretna, and 42-year-old Lt. Col. Wendell Lee Collins, of Hickory, N.C.,
were killed. A preliminary Federal Aviation Administration report on
the accident says the single-engine airplane, which was registered to
Miller, veered off the runway and hit some trees as it was taking off
from the small private airport at Ama, La. Sgt. Dwayne Lagrange,
a sheriff's spokesman, said Collins was an ROTC instructor at Tulane
University in New Orleans. The accident is under investigation by the
National Transportation Safety Board.
