With school back in full swing, Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye has a few safety tips, as many students will be walking back and forth to school this year.

Frye said that drivers should be careful of children walking back and forth to school.

Sheriff Frye said it is must safer for students to walk with a friend, rather than walking alone.

Students should also avoid strangers or anyone their parents don’t know well.

If students feel endangered they should yell and run to the nearest store or back to school.

Students should also tell parents or teachers if a stranger approached them.

Frye said, “By taking the time to carefully prepare your child on how to handle these situations, you can insure your child’s safety whether they are walking to or from school, playing in a playground or riding their bikes.”
