An Elk Park woman wrecked on Highway 194 South Thursday afternoon because she began feeling nauseous.

Trooper G.A. Johnson of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said the 31-year-old woman had been painting in Mountain City, Tennessee and the fumes had made her sick.  She had just turned off of Highway 421 onto 194 when her illness took a turn for the worse.

Around 4:45 Thursday afternoon she lost control of her 2003 Chevrolet SUV, drove off the right side of the road, and crashed into a boulder.

Trooper Johnson said the woman was transported to Watauga Medical Center, but didn’t suffer any life-threatening injuries.

There were no passengers in her vehicle, but Johnson said he believes the SUV was totaled because it sustained heavy damage to the right front quarter panel.

The driver does not face any charges.

Trooper Johnson said Watauga Medics, Watauga County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Highway Patrol, and Cove Creek firefighters and first responders responded to the scene.
