Search for drowning victim continues today PDF Print

The search for 16-year-old Nicholas Hicks of Roan Mountain, believed to have drowned Sunday near Elk Falls, continues today.  Rescue squads from both Elk Park and Avery County, as well as a dive team from Carter County Tennessee, have been looking fervently for the boy since Sunday, with no results so far. The search was put on hold yesterday after a severe thunderstorm and is expected to resume today at 9 a.m.


Hicks is believed to have been swinging on a rope with friends when he disappeared in the water. According to Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye, it is a recovery, not a rescue effort.
