NC House Subcommittee Passes Death Penalty Change PDF Print

A NC House subcommittee voted in favor of a bill that would change the state’s death penalty policy.

 

The Associated Press reports the legislation is designed to keep a murder suspect or death row prisoner with severe mental illness from facing capital punishment.  Instead, the maximum penalty for convicted criminals suffering from a mental illness would be life in prison without parole.

 

The subcommittee passed with a 5-4 vote today and now heads to the House floor.
