$15.2 million for the widening of King Street in Boone was one of 31 highway project contracts okayed by Governor Bev Perdue today.
According to the Governor’s Office, the 31 contracts totaled more than $73 million and 11 of the projects were funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The King Street widening project was awarded to Blythe Development Co. of Charlotte.
Crews will widen 1.1 miles of King Street from the Highway 321 intersection to the Highway 194 intersection.
The project will widen the two-lane segments to four lanes separated by a raised concrete median. Sidewalks will also be built along both sides of the highway and Daniel Boone Drive will be realigned to tie into the existing U.S. 421-221/N.C. 194 intersection.
Officials said work could begin as early as July 27 and crews are not expected to work during peak travel hours.
The project is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2011.
More information, including a simulated video of the finished highway, can be seen at the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s website at http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/US421Widening/.
