The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced they will close the southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 421 near exit 286B in Wilkesboro overnight Friday to begin repairing the collapsed area of the roadway.

The section will be closed from 8:00 Friday night until 8:00 Saturday morning.  DOT officials said one lane will be reopened after 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The DOT has a detour route set up with signs.  Drivers going through the area late Friday or early Saturday should take Highway 421 to Curtis Bridge Road, to N.C. 268 East, to N.C. 18/16, then back on to Highway 421.
