High Country Cheerleaders Succeed at National Competition PDF Print

A group of cheerleaders from Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties garnered quite a bit of attention at the Spirit Sports Battle at the Beach National Championship at Myrtle Beach.


Malisa Davis, who heads up New River Gymnastics Academy, said the academy’s competitive cheerleading program, Star Fusion Athletics, competed in the championship in late March.


Davis said the mini team, made up of ages 5-9, took 11th place out of 20 teams.  The senior team, which is made up of 13-18-year-olds, took third place and only finished a half point behind the winners.


These teams are used to winning.  Davis said both squads placed in the top three at a competition in Charlotte in January and the mini team placed top three in a state competition in February.


Davis said tryouts for next year’s team will begin in late may at New River Gymnastics Academy.  Interested residents can learn more about the program at
