Stand ‘um up, Sit ‘um down! That was the scene fans were treated to Tuesday night at Watauga High field in Boone, NC.

Pioneers now in first place in the NW4A after the win and a McDowell loss.

*A FULL AUDIO RECAP, INCLUDING PLAY BY PLAY HIGHLIGHTS, BY SPORTS DIRECTOR MIKE KELLY CAN BE FOUND BELOW ARTICLE*

It was all about the pitching as a dual between Pioneer hurler Jon Sharpe and Cavalier Cory Rhoney, tallied a combined 23 strikeouts into the 8th inning.

In the 7th inning, Sharpe had sat down eighteen straight batters on eleven strikeouts before giving up a base hit. That would be all the offense East Burke could muster in the inning though, and Watauga would fail to score in the bottom of the inning as the night at the ballpark headed into extra frames.

After 110 pitches and ten strikeouts, East Burke pulled Cory Rhoney in the 8th inning for reliever Donnie Hughes. Hughes struggled a bit against the Pioneers, as Austin Story’s stolen base and advance to third on a wild pitch looked promising but the Pioneers could get no closer to the winning run.

Watauga hit pay dirt in the 9th.  East Burke, allowing Matt Phillips to motor into 2nd base, dropped a right field fly ball. Jake Wallace replaced Phillips on the base path and Wallace advanced to third on a hit to second base. Coming to bat after an 0-3 night, Phil Gordon’s line drive brought Wallace home for the only score of the game.

Jon Sharpe for the night finished with 14 strikeouts on his career night.

Pioneers are scheduled to play in Taylorsville, NC on Friday but that game could be rescheduled due to rain in the weekend forecast. Stay tuned to your favorite High Country Radio Group station and goblueridge.net about possible postponements.
