The DOT has announced plans to begin work to widen Highway 221 to four lanes between Highway 421 and Jefferson. Construction should begin in 2013 according to the Transportation Improvement Program adopted next week. The DOT has announced plans to begin work to widen Highway 221 to four lanes between Highway 421 and Jefferson. Construction should begin in 2013 according to the Transportation Improvement Program adopted next week. The project was approved in five parts; only the first two have been funded. The first leg includes widening Highway 221 from Deep Gap north to Idlewild Road at a cost of $2.6 million dollars. Right Of Way Acquisition for this segment is scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2011. Construction is planned commence on this part of the project in 2013. The second phase of the project includes widening 221 from Idlewild Road north to the south fork of the New River. Right of Way Acquisition should commence on that segment in 2012.
