An Ashe County historical landmark closed its doors last Sunday because of the poor economic climate.

The Jefferson Post reported Larry and Amanda Smith reluctantly closed the doors to their Glendale Springs Inn.

The Smiths have owned and operated the inn for the past 13 years and over the past years, have made several renovations to the facility.

The restaurant and inn was known as the only bed and breakfast in the area.

Glendale Springs Inn also hosted President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore for an evening meal following the ceremony that designated the New River as an American Heritage River in 1998.

The Smiths said they worked to maintain the historical nature of the inn since they became owners but explained the challenges of running the facility proved to be too much given the current economical state.
