Fire Prevention Specialist with the Boone Fire Department, Matthew Crawford has already talked about picking the right Christmas tree and the proper safe placement of the tree. Now, Crawford gives a few pointers about how to safely light your Christmas tree and the rest of your holiday decorations.
Crawford said to make sure and pay attention to what type of lights you are using while decorating.
Crawford explained, “Some lights are only good for indoor or outdoor use. Make sure if they are indoor lights, don’t put them on the outside of your house.”
Crawford also said to pay special attention to older lights that have used in years past.
Crawford said, “You want to replace any of the lights that are warn, have broken cords, or a loose bulb connection.”
Although candles are often used around Christmas, Crawford said to never use lit candles as a decoration on Christmas trees.
Crawford also said residents should only use Christmas lights when they are able to keep an eye on them and said, “Always turn off your Christmas tree before leaving home or going to bed.”
