This fall, the official Woolly Worm from Banner Elk’s Woolly Worm festival predicted a cold and snowy winter. So far, it looks like that prediction may be coming true.
In November, the average high temperature at the top of Grandfather Mountain was around 43 degrees, about 3 degrees cooler than normal.
Grandfather Mountain's Landis Wofford said, the average low temperature was just over 28 degrees, which is nearly 4 degrees colder than usual.
The temperature dipped to eight degrees on November 19th, which broke a daily low temperature record atop the mountain.
A daily low temperature record was also tied on November 21st when the temperature fell to six degrees.
Three inches of rain fell at Grandfather, which is about an inch shy of the average, but the national weather service station reported nine inches of snow last month, which nearly triples the November average for Grandfather Mountain.
