Playwright Janet Barton Speer’s musical Moses Cone: The Denim King celebrates the man whose name is identified with Blowing Rock.

The play premieres tonight and shows through Saturday at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. Cone, who came to North Carolina from Maryland in the late 1800s, saw the need for a durable fabric for blue-collar people of the High Country. Speer is the division chair for performing arts at Lees-McRae College and director of the college’s summer theatre program. The show starts at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, $30 for adults and $14 for students.
