Flags at half-mast: National Police Week PDF Print
Monday, 12 May 2008 08:55

Avery County law enforcement officers gathered at Newland’s town square last Friday to honor and remember those who have fallen in the line of duty.

During the annual tribute ceremony, Avery Deputy Ralph Coffey was honored and presented the Purple Heart for injuries he received on February 20, 2003 in an incident that left Lt. Deputy Glenn Hicks dead.

Sheriff Kevin Frye encouraged citizens to remember that this week is National Police Week, and to fly flags at half-mast on Wednesday, the day set aside officially to honor fallen officers.
