In an update on the crash at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant yesterday, two Ashe women were hurt—but it indeed could have been much worse—as the 2004 Suzuki station wagon Mary Eldreth Pennington was driving spun out of control across the front porch of the restaurant, then crashed into several vehicles on that lot and that of the Long John Silver’s next door.  The crash occurred at about 3pm as the Suzuki station wagon was being parked, but Pennington hit the gas instead of the brake, according to Boone Police, striking restraining poles just before the porch of the restaurant, then traveled across the right side of the porch, wiping out a number of chairs—fortunately unoccupied chairs—newspaper boxes, and other porch furniture before careening out into the side lot, striking two vehicles there before hitting a third car on the lot of the seafood restaurant where it came to rest.  Two Watauga Medics ambulances transported Marie Pennington, the driver of the Suzuki, with Boone Fire working to carefully remove her from the vehicle, along with her passenger, car owner Frankie Weaver Treadway—both of Jefferson.  Boone Police cited Marie Eldreth Pennington, 86, with Careless & Reckless Driving.
