A Samaritan’s Purse Doctor and now a missionary worker from Charlotte have both contracted one of the deadliest known viruses in the world. A Samaritan’s Purse Medical Director, Dr. Kent Brantly, 33, of Fort Worth, Texas, diagnosed himself when symptoms of Ebola appeared last Wednesday, according to Ken Isaacs of Samaritan’s Purse here in Boone. And now hygienist and missionary, Nancy Writebol of Charlotte, has also tested positive for Ebola. Both are undergoing intensive treatment, Brantly in Monrovia, Liberia for treatment of the deadly disease while the circumstances that led to both being infected are being investigated by Samaritan’s Purse. Isaacs said that, although it is not clear how Brantly contracted the disease, as there are extensive protections used in contact with patients, but he said he was infected while working directly with patients. Franklin Graham, President of the Boone-based aid organization, called Dr. Brantly’s service “Heroic and sacrificial along with the entire team there.”
