A Bicyclist riding in the Blood, Sweat and Gears event was pinned under the wheel of a truck in an accident during the event late Saturday morning. The State Patrol says that the accident occurred near the intersection of Bethel Road and Beaverdam Road at about 10:45am when a white construction truck driven by Jimmy Penley of Creston backed out into the road and into the path of the cycle, ridden by Boyd Humphrey, listing a West Virginia address. The investigating trooper said that Humphrey slammed into the back of the backing truck and ended up underneath the vehicle, which ran over his leg, pinning him under back right tire of the truck. Beaverdam Fire/First Responders, Watauga Medics and Watauga Rescue were all called to the scene, finding the truck still on the mans leg, but they managed to get the truck off of Humphrey and rush him to Watauga Medical Center where the trooper said he was conscious and able to tell him some details of the crash, although he had been unconscious for a time during the accident. The trooper cited James and Sons driver Jimmy Penley for an unsafe movement.
