Citizens Meet Over Boone Water Intake Tonight PDF Print
Written by Steve Frank
Tuesday, 13 May 2014 06:41

Tonight,  a meeting of citizens opposed to the Town of Boone’s water project from the New River in Todd will gather to hear  about the project and what they’re calling it’s adverse affects on farming, tourism, and river recreation.  The Town of Boone proposes to construct an intake to take up to 4 million gallons of water per day, the release on the meeting pointing out that the combined pull from the New would be 7 million gallons per day when added to the 3 million gallons Boone currently has available from the New River. The proposed site borders Ashe and Watauga, but with some part of the access crossing into Ashe—and Ashe Commissioners requiring that it not cross into their county—the town of Boone had to take a new path.  The flier on the meeting tonight says danger from the intake includes potential condemnation of part of the Cooper Farm and land along Brownwood Road from Railroad Grade Road to Highway 421.
The meeting will take place at the Riverside Restaurant, 7181 Railroad Grade Road, Todd, at 6:00  p.m., and may include a tour the proposed  site. Frank  Packard,  a  concerned  resident  has researched the project and has his own studies of both the Boone water situation and the impact of the project will show his findings.
