Plea Continued in Watauga Court in Hotel Deaths PDF Print

The case against former manager of the Boone Best Western Hotel, Barry Damon Mallatere, was continued in Watauga County last week, and he will not be there to enter a plea in the deaths of three people at the local hotel last spring.  The NC courts website listed Mallatere as making the appearance in the Watauga County morning session, but court officials said that a continuance was granted in that last week.  Mallatere is charged with manslaughter in the three deaths, a couple from Washington State, who were beginning a cross-country trip last April and, then an 11-year old boy from Rock Hill SC died in the same room—225—in early June, his mother seriously injured—all from carbon monoxide fumes from a faulty exhaust system on a replaced pool heater just below that room.
