A 7 month old child was airlifted from the scene of a Vilas crash this morning after the car he was in flipped. Dean Melton was in the last vehicle the sedan passed traveling toward Boone, passing in what Melton said was a no-passing zone. State Trooper Townsend reported the wreck occurred at about 9:50 on US 421 as driver Darker Weah, 26, of Greensboro, passed several vehicles heading toward Boone, Townsend saying he dropped a tire off of the left side of the road and pulled back across and off the road to the right. The child was actually thrown out the back of the car, where he had been in a child seat next to his mother, Patience Wornee of Johnson City Tennessee--a child seat with no straps. Weah and Wornee were treated at the scene while 7-month old Jobari Jappah was flown by WINGS Air Rescue to the Johnson City Medical Center . Townsend said the child was in stable condition. Weah was charged with Careless & Reckless Driving and a child seat violation. The wreck tied up traffic on 421 for well over two hours in spite of the 2000 Nissan being off the road. Cove Creek Fire and First Responders, Watauga Medics and Watauga Rescue all converged on the scene along with Watauga Deputies, and the State Patrol.
