High Country highways became snow covered early today from the storm coming over the mountains, closing schools across the High Country—the wintry weather causing the closing of some area roads. The predicted wintry weather finally found the High Country just after 4 this morning, the coating of snow impacting two stretches of US 221—Drug Store Hill in Avery just below Crossnore, closed for two hours with numerous vehicles stranded, and in Ashe, near Mulatto Mountain, where a vehicle slid off of the road. As snow slacked off, a second wave was setting up, with the moisture from this system and a wrap-around from a coastal low set to bring snow back this afternoon. Advice for the day—stay tuned in.
