State, Federal, and Burke County investigators are still following the path of Troy Whisnant during the time after he killed his father and step-mother at their Fish Hatchery Road home, saying that around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Whisnant’s parent’s vehicle was found in someone’s yard in McDowell County, and from there, investigators said Whisnant stole a car and headed back to Burke County. It is not clear what he did with that car, but he then stole another vehicle and crashed it on Highway 181 near the K and C Country Store. There, at 7:40 a.m. he was captured on surveillance video walking inside the store, the clerk describing her encounter, saying there was no clue that he was in the middle of a multi-county crime spree. As he left, he walked behind the store and stole a wrecker truck, later found near the scene of the search. By the end of the day, officer Crisp and Troy Whisnant were both dead.
