Two Young Women Escape Burning House PDF Print

Ashe County Fire investigators say that an electrical problem caused a fire that totaled a rental house early yesterday morning, the occupants barely able to get out as the house burned.  Ashe Fire Marshal Bob Davis said that Kayla Barker and another young woman had just been living in the rental home, owned by Tim & Christie Shatley, for a short time, but they lost most everything in the 7:45am fire, Barker’s dog alerting and waking her to discover the fire—and the dog perished in the fire. Davis said the young women managed to escape with just the clothes they were wearing—even barefoot—as a number of Ashe Fire departments converged on the Crumpler home at 5885 Old NC 16 North, with New River and other departments soon on the scene.  At about 8:15, the fire was declared under control, but fire units had to be called back at about noon for a flare-up. Red Cross said they aided three adults on the scene of that fire with food, clothing, and a storage container.
