Fire last night damaged a Newland home, but a fast response from a number of Avery Fire departments minimized the loss. The call came in around 7:45 last night to a Watauga Street home near the elementary school, first arriving firemen finding fire in the attic and upper areas of the house. It took about 20 minutes or so of tearing into the areas where fire was found to determine that the blaze was controlled, and the entourage of departments en route and setting up were released from the scene.  Damage assessment and cause being done by the Avery Fire Marshal’s Office.
