Needy families pile up, Red Cross needs support PDF Print
Wednesday, 09 January 2008 19:00

The Watauga County Branch of the American Red Cross has been busy helping local families in crisis. Just ask Emergency Services Director Cheryl Bickley.

“We’ve had about eight families since July 1, and six of those have been in the past month.”

That includes a family in Beaver Dam that lost their home in a Tuesday fire.

“We are putting them up at the Holiday Inn for three nights, and that usually gives them a chance to find an apartment or a home.”

The Beaver Dam family has found a place to live, Bickley says. The Red Cross has also assisted the family with thrift store referrals for furniture and a debit card to use for clothing, shoes, food and other essentials. That’s not all.

“This particular family lost medication and eyeglasses, so we’ll be replacing those as well.”

Bickley hopes the community will get involved and make a donation. Donations not only benefit the Beaver Dam family, but others even worse off, she says.

“All the money that’s donated here in Watauga County, stays in Watauga County and Avery County.”

If you don’t have the cash- there are other ways to help out.

“We are always looking for volunteers, whether it be just coming in the office and answering the phones, volunteering at Bloodmobiles, coming in and taking disaster services courses…”

For more information, call the Red Cross at 828-264-8226.
