The 2014 Watauga County Relay For Life held their kickoff party last night, building excitement for the sequence that will lead to the main event June 20th at Watauga High. Relay leaders, team captains and their team members joined newcomers at Deerfield United Methodist for the official opened the Relay For Life fundraising season in Watauga County. Last year’s event raised over $115,000, netting over $113,000, a total drive director Melissa Hiatt said was a tremendous success in the economic environment. Hiatt said that Kathy Idol is returning as co-chairwoman, along with Brian Barker who also serves as accounting chairman. Honored for last year’s fund-raising, Friends for Life, raising $11,406, Deerfield Dream Team, raising $11,260, and Jerry’s Intimidators, raising $10,621, top three of the top ten teams. Top 10 individual fund raisers include Della Presnell, Kathy Idol, Evelina Idol and Sara Speed—each raising over $3000, as did the children’s top money raiser, Amber Hamby.
