There’s a homework assignment due today—a rather important homework assignment, and it is for the person who wants to next lead the Watauga County Schools. The Watauga Board of Education concludes the application process of searching for a new superintendent, with applications for the position due this afternoon by 5 p.m. Watauga County Schools' public information officer Marshall Ashcraft said the board has received 11 applications as of earlier this week.  Currently, Dr. David Fonseca is serving as Watauga County School's interim superintendent, as he assumed leadership in late March 2013, when the school system announced a $186,110 buyout of Superintendent David Kafitz's contract as he reportedly had a number of unacceptable interactions in the community. The board will review the applications, then select candidates for interviews this month with the target to employ the new superintendent beginning July 1. Fonseca will continue to serve as interim superintendent through June 30.
