North Carolina’s gas tax has moved to the highest
level allowed under state law, the Associated Press reports.
Drivers are paying
30.15 cents per gallon in state taxes. The rate increased by .2 cents per
gallon on Tuesday because a portion of the tax is tied to rising and falling
wholesale fuel prices. The tax would be higher had state lawmakers and Governor
Mike Easley not agreed to cap the tax last year. North Carolina’s gas tax is
used for road improvements and transportation needs.
