|Second Victim Dies in Newland Assault Case|

One man was dead and a woman was found critically injured in an overnight assault at a Newland residence on Sunday. Newland Police Department was dispatched at 12:40am to a domestic disturbance at 200 Summer Haven Street in Newland where both Ronald William Buchanan, in his 60’s, and Brandy
Rose, said to be in her 30’s, were found beaten.
Ronald William Buchanan died shortly after he was rushed to Cannon Memorial in Linville, and Brandy Rose was then rushed from there to the Johnson City Medical Center suffering life-threatening injuries, according to the Newland Police release. Rose died of her injuries Monday evening.
The Newland Police Department arrested Oscar Martin Cook III on a count of Murder and one of attempted first degree murder, Cook being held at the Avery County Jail on no bond. The motive and cause of the assault is still under investigation.
The Avery Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene along with the SBI, working through the night on the investigation and search for the suspect, and with that effort, the Newland Police Department thanked the Avery County Sheriff's Office, The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and all emergency agencies that assisted with the investigation.
