Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting in Lenoir PDF Print

One person is behind bars in Caldwell County after a fatal shooting Thursday afternoon. According to authorities in Caldwell County, the shooting took place just after 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon at 1122 Tara Place in Lenoir.



Officers from the Lenoir Police Department and Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and discovered a male victim, 20 year old Dylan Joseph Short of Hudson, NC, had been fatally wounded from a gunshot. Deputies and Investigators from Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations worked into the late hours of the night on the scene and interviewing witnesses and a suspect.


Investigators then arrested Nancy Benge Austin, 57, who was staying at the residence where the shooting took place. Nancy Austin was charged with Murder and is being held in the Caldwell County Detention Center under no bond. Nancy Austin will first appear in court in Lenoir on Monday, Dec. 30.


The motive and connection between the victim and arrested party is not being released at this time as investigators continue to gather evidence. Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones commented on the shooting, stating “This is a tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family. This was a young man just beginning his life and it has been taken away from him.”
