Six Hurt in Ashe Crash PDF Print

6 people were injured as four vehicles collided early Sunday afternoon just out of West Jefferson.  The 1:45 pm crash occurred at the US 221 south intersection with Nettle Knob Road as Christopher Miller, 41, of West Jefferson was stopped to turn left onto Nettle Knob Road in his ’97 Subaru, George Powell, 59, of Fleetwood slowing behind him in an ’05 Honda CRV when 22-year old Kenneth Mabe of Ennis slammed into the back of the Honda.  Mabe’s Chevy S-10 was then struck by the ’04 Toyota Highlander of Linda Kraus, 53 of West Jefferson, unable to avoid the truck as she approached from the rear.  Trooper Denny Parunak said that the six were taken to Ashe Memorial for treatment, but that none of the injuries appeared life threatening. He estimated that all four vehicles were totaled in the crash, and he cited Kenneth Mabe for Failure to Reduce Speed in the wreck. He said the injured passengers were in Powell’s, Mabe’s and Crouse’s vehicles. West Jefferson Police Department, Blue Ridge Medical Transport, Ashe County Rescue Squad, and members of the West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident, which tied up traffic on US 221 for some time.
