Blowing Rock Moves Forward on Theater PDF Print

A great step was taken last night by the Blowing Rock Town Council toward giving the High Country another theater—maybe by this summer.  A number of elements would have to fall into place for that to happen, but the first step was taken with the town agreeing to move forward with the project, with the end game being that Ensemble Stage, the Blowing Rock theater group, would make use of the former Blowing Rock Fire station as their more permanent home.  Artistic Director Gary Smith’s proposal includes a plan to renovate the building into a 124 seat performance auditorium as well as ancillary theater rehearsal and prep areas, but also serving the community, saying his conversations with town staff helped him modify plans to incorporate other uses. Now Town Manager Scott Fogleman will begin the process of working with Smith and a number of other resources to investigate the possibilities of the property and whether the theater can work on the site with other possible uses, such as a year-round Farmer’s Market in the mix.  He will also look at modifying an already-filed grant application for the purpose.
