New state laws, effective yesterday, smoking, immigration checks PDF Print

The New Year brings about 40 new laws to North Carolina. 
Effective yesterday, smoking will be prohibited in all state government facilities. Sheriff’s offices will be required to check the immigration status of those charged with felonies or impaired driving. Motorcyclists will be required to wear safety helmets meeting federal guidelines. Profits from fees on rabies tags will be used to fund spay and neuter programs. Legal expense funds for candidates or elected officials must now disclose donors. On a green note, electric utilities will have to meet renewable energy and efficiency requirements by 2021.
