Just after noon Sunday, a tractor and trailer loaded down with Christmas trees lost its brakes while traveling north on US 421 in Wilkes County. According to Wilkes Emergency Management, the truck lost its brakes, then went down an embankment, coming to rest in a sand pile just off of the highway. First responders from the Champion Fire Department responded to the accident around 12:30 p.m. The truck suffered extensive damage but the driver was not hurt. Crews were on scene cleaning up the accident until around 4 p.m Sunday. The driver had just picked up a load of Frasier Fir trees and was headed to New Jersey.
