Watauga County Schools and Ashe County Schools in North Carolina, as well as Johnson County Schools in Tennessee will be on two-hour delays today, with limited bus service.

The decision in Watauga County was made just before three p.m. yesterday. According to associate superintendent Mark Hurst, the decision is never made lightly.

“We have a team of individuals that go out and check roads throughout the county. They assess the road conditions and then they tell the superintendent.”

Each day missed has to be made up at the end of the school year. With two school days already cancelled this year, school is tentatively scheduled to have its last day in Watauga on May 22. That could change with more inclement weather. The state requires school to be in session for at least 180 days. Last year, Watauga missed six school days due to inclement weather.
