Western North Carolina could be the locale of a port
city, the Associated Press reports.
Researchers are looking at the High Country
region for an inland port where oceangoing containers would be moved between
trucks and trains. Marion in McDowell County may be a strong possibility. The
CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads converge in Marion and Interstate 40 is
easily accessible. A port would drive economic growth and could add hundreds of
jobs to the region. A $250,000 taxpayer study plan is being conducted.
