Marion could be a Port City PDF Print
Monday, 17 December 2007 20:27
Western North Carolina could be the locale of a port city, the Associated Press reports.
Researchers are looking at the High Country region for an inland port where oceangoing containers would be moved between trucks and trains. Marion in McDowell County may be a strong possibility. The CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads converge in Marion and Interstate 40 is easily accessible. A port would drive economic growth and could add hundreds of jobs to the region. A $250,000 taxpayer study plan is being conducted. Researchers plan to study the Virginia Inland Port today and visit Marion next year.
