Update – SBI Investigates Joe Howell’s Store Fire PDF Print

The State Burea of Investigations is now looking into this morning’s fire at Joe Howell's Store on Highway 19-E in Avery County.

According to Sheriff Kevin Frye, it looked as though the building had been completely engullfed in flames. The blaze, now under control and in the clean-up stages was called in at 4:11 am. Firefighters from Green Valley, Frank, Crossnore, Elk Park, Newland and Linville fire departments, as well as firefighters from Mitchell County responded. Two lanes of Highway 19-E remain closed. With two lanes open traffic is moving slowly. Due to power outages and lack of access, classes at Riverside Elementary School were canceled today. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.


Joe Howell's Store is a community landmark. It contains a carpentry shop that specializes in mantles for fireplaces. Joe Howell's Store is located near the Mitchell County line.
