Murder for Hire Postmaster has Avery Ties PDF Print
Wednesday, 05 December 2007 21:46

Avery County Sheriff’s deputies joined a group of federal agents representing the Postal Inspections, ATF and the FBI yesterday in searching land and buildings belonging to “murder for hire” suspect David Willis.

58-year-old Willis was indicted Tuesday for plotting to kill his ex-wife.

Deputies were sent to assist after a federal request, Sheriff Kevin Frye says.

Deputies brought their knowledge of the area to the group. While the investigation is not over, Frye says nothing of importance has been found. Frye says it’s important for local authorities to be part of the search in case some evidence was collected that might have led to crimes either committed or planned to be committed in Avery County.

Willis, a Cornelius postmaster, is alleged by prosecutors to have plotted his ex-wife’s murder because he thought a financial settlement from their divorce would ruin his retirement.

The FBI began its investigation against Willis in October after one of Willis’ friends told investigators about Willis’ alleged plot.
